Świnoujście Port First STS LNG Bunkering

Świnoujście, Poland | November 14, 2025 – Świnoujście Port has successfully completed its first-ever ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation, marking a significant milestone in the port’s sustainable shipping development. The operation, carried out on November 11, 2025, saw TT-Line’s LNG-powered ferry Peter Pan refueled by the bunker vessel Avenir Ascension, using liquefied natural gas supplied by ORLEN S.A.

This historic event followed the port’s first commercial LNG loading at the Świnoujście LNG Terminal the previous day, operated by GAZ-SYSTEM, underscoring the port’s expanding role as a regional hub for LNG and clean fuel operations. Together, these milestones highlight Świnoujście’s commitment to advancing sustainable maritime logistics in the Baltic Sea.

Commercial LNG Loading Opens a New Chapter

On November 10, 2025, the Świnoujście LNG Terminal completed its first commercial LNG loading, enabled by a PLN 27.88 million EU-backed expansion under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The upgrade included a new offshore quay for LNG carriers, enhancing Poland’s ability to distribute LNG efficiently across the Baltic and reinforcing regional energy security.

The following day, the Avenir Ascension transported LNG directly to TT-Line’s Peter Pan, establishing the port’s first-ever STS LNG bunkering link between the terminal, Avenir LNG, and TT-Line.

TT-Line Brings Green Expertise to Świnoujście Port

For TT-Line, this operation represents both a milestone and a continuation of its sustainable fuel strategy. The company has previously conducted LNG and bio-LNG bunkering at Port in Trelleborg (Sweden) and Port of Travemünde (Germany), marking an extension of that expertise to Poland.

Peter Pan and her sister ship Nils Holgersson are among the world’s largest LNG-powered Ro-Pax ferries. With Poland’s expanding LNG infrastructure, these vessels can leverage cleaner fuels, contributing to emission reductions and aligning with IMO decarbonization goals.

Pioneering STS LNG Bunkering at Świnoujście

The bunkering operation took approximately 3.5 hours, with Peter Pan receiving LNG directly from the Avenir Ascension. The seamless coordination among the port, TT-Line, Avenir LNG, ORLEN, and GAZ-SYSTEM demonstrated both technical readiness and the power of international collaboration in advancing LNG logistics for maritime use.

Świnoujście Port: A New Hub for Sustainable Shipping

The Szczecin–Świnoujście port complex, integrated into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and the Baltic–Adriatic Corridor, handles over 29 million tonnes of cargo annually. With the addition of LNG bunkering and expanded ferry terminals, the port solidifies its position as a central logistics and clean energy hub for the Baltic Sea region.

The port authorities described the weekend’s events as “a weekend of firsts,” emphasizing that these milestones are the result of long-term infrastructure development, strategic investment, and international collaboration.

A Step Toward Sustainable Shipping in the Baltic

The success of the first LNG bunkering operation at Świnoujście not only secures Poland’s place on the European LNG map but also showcases the maritime industry’s readiness to meet FuelEU Maritime and IMO decarbonization goals.

Partners Driving Świnoujście Port’s First STS LNG Bunkering

The success of Świnoujście Port’s first-ever ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation was made possible through close collaboration between leading players in maritime transport, energy logistics, and port management. Each partner contributed unique expertise and infrastructure, shaping a new chapter in Poland’s sustainable shipping journey.

  • TT-Line – German-Swedish ferry operator connecting Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and southern Sweden. A pioneer in LNG and bio-LNG usage, TT-Line operates Peter Pan and Nils Holgersson, among the world’s largest LNG-powered Ro-Pax ferries, reducing maritime emissions across the Baltic Sea.
  • Avenir LNG – Specialist in small-scale LNG logistics, focusing on safe and efficient STS bunkering. The company supports ports and shipping companies in transitioning to low-emission fuels.
  • ORLEN S.A. – Poland’s largest energy company, providing the LNG for this historic operation and supporting the country’s clean energy and sustainable maritime objectives.
  • GAZ-SYSTEM – Operator of the Świnoujście LNG Terminal, supplying essential infrastructure for LNG storage, loading, and distribution. The terminal’s expanded offshore quay enabled this first-of-its-kind STS bunkering operation.
  • Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority – Oversees Poland’s largest Baltic port complex, including ferry, cargo, and LNG terminals. The authority facilitates sustainable development and ensures the ports meet modern environmental and operational standards.

Together, these partners demonstrated how strategic collaboration and technical expertise can deliver a milestone in cleaner maritime operations, positioning Świnoujście as a leading hub for LNG and sustainable shipping in the Baltic region.
