Shell Marine First LNG Bunkering HMM SKY Singapore

SINGAPORE – July, 2025 — Shell Marine has recently marked another milestone in its global LNG bunkering journey with the successful and safe completion of its first LNG bunkering operation for HMM Sky in Singapore. The operation highlights Shell’s continued commitment to supporting major shipping lines on their pathway to net-zero emissions.

This event also signals progress in the decarbonisation of the container shipping sector, as HMM intensifies efforts to reach net-zero by 2045 by investing in dual-fuel LNG vessel technology.

HMM’s Net-Zero Commitment

As South Korea’s flagship carrier, HMM is advancing one of the industry’s most ambitious decarbonisation strategies. The bunkering of HMM Sky, a modern dual-fuel container vessel, reflects the company’s belief in LNG as a key transitional fuel capable of delivering immediate emissions reductions while offering compatibility with future green fuels.

Shell Marine: Partnering with HMM for a Cleaner Maritime Future

Dexter Belmar, Vice President of Global Downstream LNG at Shell Marine, shared his thoughts on the milestone:

We are proud to complete our first LNG bunkering for HMM SKY in Singapore — a safe, successful operation that reflects the deep collaboration between Shell and our shipping partners. Together with companies like HMM that are leading investment in dual-fuel vessels, we are leveraging LNG to decarbonise today while advancing toward bio-LNG and synthetic fuels tomorrow.”

Belmar emphasized Shell Marine’s long-term strategy of enabling shipping decarbonisation through partnerships, infrastructure expansion, and innovation in low-carbon fuels.

Expanding Shell’s Global LNG Bunkering Footprint

This latest operation was enabled by Shell Marine’s robust LNG bunkering infrastructure, which now spans 26 strategic ports across 12 countries. Supported by a fleet of 12 LNG bunkering vessels, Shell has completed over 2,500 LNG bunkering operations worldwide, positioning itself as a leader in supporting dual-fuel vessel deployment at scale.

Singapore, as a major LNG bunkering hub, continues to serve as a cornerstone of Shell’s network, thanks to strategic partnerships like the FueLNG joint venture.

LNG: A Practical Decarbonisation Solution for Container Shipping

As regulatory and customer-driven decarbonisation pressures increase, LNG offers a ready-now solution to significantly lower emissions from shipping. It reduces sulfur oxides (SOₓ) and particulate matter to near-zero, cuts nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) by up to 80%, and lowers carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 20–30% compared to conventional marine fuels.

Critically, LNG’s compatibility with bio-LNG and synthetic e-methane provides a future-proof pathway toward net-zero without requiring a complete redesign of vessel systems or infrastructure.
