Auckland, New Zealand | December 4, 2025 – In a major strategic move to accelerate the maritime sector’s transition to net-zero, Port of Auckland Limited (POAL), through its bunkering subsidiary Seafuels, has signed a shipbuilding contract for a next-generation, multi-fuel bunkering vessel.

The $50 million investment strengthens Auckland’s position as a sustainable marine fuel hub, enabling the supply of a wide spectrum of low- and zero-carbon fuels, including biodiesel and green methanol.

This state-of-the-art vessel marks a pivotal milestone in POAL’s ambition to meet its 2050 zero-emissions target, while supporting global shipping lines in decarbonizing their Pacific operations.

A Modern Bunkering Solution for a Decarbonizing Fleet

The newly commissioned 88.8-metre IMO Class II Chemical Tanker is engineered to deliver traditional low-sulphur fuel and marine diesel oil alongside emerging sustainable alternatives.

The contract has been awarded to ADA DENIZCILIK VE TERSANE ISLETMECILIGI A.S. of Tuzla, Turkey, with delivery expected in late 2027. The vessel will replace the long-serving M.T. Awanuia, which will have completed 18 years of service.

Port of Auckland CEO Roger Gray emphasized the importance of the investment:

“This tanker is a significant investment in the port’s future and a big milestone in our sustainability journey. We have worked with our shipping line customers to understand their future fuel needs, and we’re pleased to be able to offer a practical tool toward lower-carbon intensive shipping.”

Global shipping contributes 2–3% of global emissions, prompting the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to set ambitious 2050 zero-emissions targets. Port of Auckland aims to be a key enabler of this transition in New Zealand waters.

Seafuels Director Allan D’Souza added:

“This investment demonstrates the port’s unwavering commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability, supporting the global transition to cleaner energy while strengthening our commitment to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry.”

Building on a Legacy of Green Innovation

This new contract continues POAL’s momentum as a pioneer of green maritime technology. It follows the successful launch of Sparky, the world’s first full-sized, ship-handling electric tugboat, introduced in 2022.

Mr. Gray noted “Achieving these IMO targets requires a significant transition to zero-emission alternatives, and Port of Auckland is pleased to support this transition for ships operating in New Zealand.”

The new vessel, set to be named and blessed upon delivery in 2027, will immediately enter a long-term charter with a major fuel provider, ensuring a seamless and impactful entry into Auckland’s bunkering fleet.

The Legacy of the Awanuia

The replacement vessel will take over from the M.T. Awanuia, a 3,900 DWT bunker tanker that has been the backbone of Auckland’s refuelling operations since 2009.

Built in Turkey, the Awanuia serves as the sole bunkering vessel in the Auckland region, transporting fuel from Marsden Point to deliver essential products such as VLSFO and MGO. It features double-hulled construction with capacity for 3,200 MT of VLSFO and 700 MT of MGO.

For nearly two decades, the Awanuia has ensured safe, reliable service and supported the smooth flow of maritime trade. Transitioning to a modern, multi-fuel capable tanker marks a strategic evolution—positioning Auckland to meet the future energy needs of the global fleet.
