Pacific International Lines (PIL), a prominent global container shipping line, has officially named its first 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel containership, Kota Oasis, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ambitious fleet renewal and sustainability efforts. The naming ceremony was held at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s yard in China, where the vessel was blessed by Mrs. Cindy Chang, wife of Mr. Peter Chang, PIL’s Deputy Chairman.
Kota Oasis is the first of four LNG dual-fuel container vessels in the “O” Class series ordered by PIL from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, designed to improve operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. These ships are part of PIL’s broader strategy to optimize network deployment while transitioning to a greener fleet to meet the evolving demands of the global shipping industry.

A Key Step Towards Sustainability
The delivery of Kota Oasis represents PIL’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability. As Mr. Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, shared at the event, the vessel symbolizes a significant leap towards the company’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2022, PIL became the first Asian container shipping line to invest in LNG dual-fuel vessels, a decision that aligns with their long-term environmental goals.
“We are delighted to welcome Kota Oasis to our fleet,” said Kastrup. “This vessel represents another significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and operational excellence. With Kota Oasis joining the fleet, alongside our recently delivered 14,000 TEU ‘E’ class vessels, the ‘O’ Class vessels will play a critical role in enhancing our global connectivity while helping us meet the ever-evolving needs of our customers.”
The Symbolism Behind the Name
The name Kota Oasis was chosen to embody the vessel’s role as a symbol of sustainability and innovation within the maritime industry. The term “Oasis” signifies a sanctuary of progress towards a greener and more sustainable future for global shipping, a vision at the heart of PIL’s strategy. The vessel is not just an engineering marvel but also an important step in ensuring that PIL contributes positively to environmental protection while maintaining global shipping connectivity.

Cutting-Edge Technology for a Greener Future
Kota Oasis and its sister ships in the “O” Class series are not just powered by LNG but are also capable of running on bio-methane fuels, which further reduces their carbon footprint. These vessels are equipped with WinGD X-DF engines and iCER (Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling) technology that significantly reduces methane emissions, enhancing the vessel’s sustainability credentials.
Additionally, Kota Oasis is prepared to be ammonia-ready, equipped with fuel tanks designed to accommodate ammonia, a future fuel that may play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the maritime industry. This technological preparedness ensures PIL’s fleet is future-ready and capable of adapting to emerging fuel solutions that support long-term environmental sustainability.
PIL’s Expanding LNG Fleet Containerships
The Kota Oasis joins PIL’s growing fleet of LNG-powered vessels, becoming the company’s fifth LNG dual-fuel vessel to be delivered. The vessel will add to the four 14,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels that PIL received in 2024. PIL also has 13 more LNG dual-fuel vessels on order, set to be delivered in the coming years, underscoring its dedication to modernizing its fleet and achieving sustainable operations.
This is part of PIL’s ongoing efforts to maintain its competitive edge in the shipping industry while staying true to its commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of its operations. The newbuild vessels are expected to further strengthen PIL’s global connectivity, meeting growing customer demands while adhering to international environmental regulations.
