PIL Launch KOTA OCEAN LNG Boxship

Pacific International Lines (PIL) celebrated the naming of its latest LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Ocean, at Singapore’s PSA Terminal. The event, marking a milestone in PIL’s fleet renewal, aligns with Singapore’s SG60 celebrations and underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable and efficient maritime solutions.

Singapore, 6 June 2025 – Pacific International Lines (PIL), one of Asia’s leading container shipping lines, celebrated a momentous occasion today with the naming of its latest LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Ocean, at the PSA Terminal in Singapore. This event not only marked a significant milestone in PIL’s fleet renewal program but was also held in conjunction with Singapore’s 60th anniversary of nation-building, or SG60, reinforcing PIL’s ongoing commitment to the future of sustainable and innovative maritime operations.

The naming ceremony was officiated by Ms. Ho Ching, Chairman of Temasek Trust, who had the honor of christening the 8,200 TEU vessel. Kota Ocean is the sixth LNG dual-fuel vessel in PIL’s growing fleet and the second in the series of four 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels designated as “O” Class, which PIL is building as part of its strategic investment in cleaner, greener, and more efficient shipping technologies.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

PIL’s CEO, Mr. Lars Kastrup, expressed gratitude for Ms. Ho Ching’s role in the naming ceremony. “We are honored that Ms Ho Ching has named our vessel, Kota Ocean. This represents a significant step forward in our fleet renewal programme and our ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency while contributing to sustainability in the maritime industry,” said Mr Kastrup.

The naming of Kota Ocean is not just a testament to PIL’s growth, but also to our dedication to sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. As the first Asian container shipping line to invest in LNG dual-fuel vessels in 2022, we have since ordered 18 new vessels, and with each new addition to our fleet, we bring ourselves closer to our net-zero emissions target by 2050, in alignment with Singapore’s national net-zero goals,” he added.

Enhancing Operational Capabilities and Supporting Global Trade

Operating on PIL’s South West Africa Service (SWS), Kota Ocean will primarily serve the trade route connecting China, Singapore, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast. This vital service will help strengthen trade links between Asia and Africa, fostering economic development and trade growth in both regions.

The new vessel joins Kota Oasis, which was delivered in April 2025, and four existing 14,000 TEU LNG vessels already in operation. PIL has further solidified its future with another 12 vessels on order, including two 8,200 TEU vessels, five 13,000 TEU vessels, and five 9,000 TEU vessels set to be delivered in the coming years.

Pioneering Green Shipping Solutions

The Kota Ocean and its sister vessels incorporate the latest advancements in sustainable shipping technology. Notably, these vessels are powered by LNG, a cleaner alternative to conventional marine fuels, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, the vessels have been designed to use bio-methane fuels and are equipped with cutting-edge exhaust recycling technology, which significantly reduces methane emissions. These green technologies contribute to PIL’s mission to minimize the environmental impact of its operations and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.

In addition to environmental considerations, the newbuild vessels feature several energy-efficient innovations, including:

  • A full-spade type rudder with twisted leading edge.
  • A rudder bulb and pre-swirl stator.
  • An optimised hydrodynamic hull form with superior anti-fouling coatings, all of which contribute to enhancing fuel efficiency.

These design features are instrumental in reducing fuel consumption, helping PIL to achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously lowering operational costs.

Integration of Digitalisation and Automation

PIL continues to lead the charge in integrating digital technologies into its fleet. The Kota Ocean is equipped with advanced digital solutions, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), which enhance the automation of vessel operations and improve operational efficiency and safety. These technologies enable real-time monitoring and data analytics, empowering PIL to optimize vessel routes, enhance safety measures, and improve overall fleet management.

Through PIL’s Centre for Maritime Efficiency, the company is able to monitor and plan its fleet operations more effectively, ensuring optimal performance and minimal environmental impact. The integration of digitalisation also enhances the company’s ability to respond dynamically to shifting market demands and operational challenges.

A Sustainable Future

PIL’s newbuild program aligns with its long-term vision of growth, fleet renewal, and sustainability. With a robust orderbook, including both LNG dual-fuel vessels and digitalized solutions, PIL continues to expand its fleet while simultaneously working towards its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The company’s ongoing investments in green technologies and digitalisation reflect its strategic focus on delivering innovative and sustainable shipping solutions that meet the evolving needs of its customers, partners, and stakeholders.

As PIL continues to embrace the challenges of the future, the naming of Kota Ocean serves as a powerful symbol of the company’s dedication to both the maritime industry and the environment. It is a testament to PIL’s ongoing efforts to uphold Singapore’s position as a global maritime leader while contributing to the nation’s sustainable growth and development.
