DNV AiP Validates Feasibility for MSC, CIMC ORIC, and Changhong Consortium, Zero-Carbon at Scale: 21,700 TEU ULCS Integrates Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engines

Shanghai, China – December 4, 2025 – In a significant advance for the decarbonization of the mainline container shipping sector, DNV, the world’s leading classification society for containerships, has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a massive 21,700 TEU ammonia-dual fueled ultra-large container ship (ULCS) design.

The milestone was celebrated by the joint consortium of partners, global shipping giant MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, Chinese shipyard Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, and designer CIMC Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), at the Marintec 2025 conference in Shanghai.

Design Targets Zero-Carbon Readiness and Peak Efficiency

The proposed 21,700 TEU vessel is engineered for the next generation of zero-carbon global liner services. Key features integrating both safety and efficiency include:

  • Propulsion System: Integration of the latest-generation ammonia dual-fuel main engines.
  • Fuel Storage: Oversized C-type ammonia tanks to maximize operational range on the alternative fuel.
  • Hydrodynamic Efficiency: A cutting-edge hull design featuring a new vertical bow, optimized stern, hull lines, low-resistance coatings, high-efficiency propellers, and energy-saving hydrodynamic features. The design’s efficiency has been validated through extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and model tests.
  • Cargo Optimization: A twin-island deck layout and optimized foredeck design allow for additional 40-foot container bays, enhancing cargo capacity while maintaining crucial port and operational compatibility.

Mr. Yin Xunbin, General Manager of CIMC ORIC, emphasized the future-ready aspect of the design. “This vessel concept offers shipowners an option for high-capacity, energy-efficient, zero-carbon container ship as part of the next-generation sustainable global liner services. This milestone validates our commitment to providing future-ready vessels that meet global trade demands while reducing emissions.”

DNV Validation Reinforces Ammonia’s Viability

DNV’s classification experts conducted a rigorous review of the concept design against relevant DNV and international standards. The evaluation covered critical safety elements, including:

  • The ammonia fuel system (tank and handling).
  • The overall propulsion arrangement.
  • Safety and mitigation systems designed specifically for handling ammonia’s unique hazards, such as toxicity.

The AiP confirms the technical feasibility of the design and clears the path for the consortium to proceed with more detailed engineering studies and potential commercial construction to DNV class rules.

Norbert Kray, DNV Senior Vice President and Maritime Regional Manager for Greater China, commented on the rapid progress of ammonia as a fuel option. “Ammonia-dual fuel options are firmly in the decarbonization race, we have gone from concept to orders, and soon will see the first deliveries. The AiP demonstrates that the design is in line with industry’s leading safety and design standards, reinforcing confidence in ammonia as a viable fuel for large container vessels.”

The consortium will now focus on detailed design and comprehensive safety analyses, including ammonia mitigation and gas handling protocols, to integrate the fuel system fully into the ULCS design.
