Moeve and Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea sign a historic deal to supply 40,000 tons of 2G marine biofuel by 2025, marking a major step in maritime decarbonization.

Las Palmas / Santa Cruz de Tenerife – May 30, 2025 – In a landmark move for sustainable maritime transport, Moeve has signed its largest-ever supply agreement for second-generation (2G) marine biofuels with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea, marking a major milestone in the decarbonization of shipping in the Canary Islands. The agreement will see Moeve deliver 40,000 tons of renewable marine biofuels to the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas by the end of 2025.

The long-term contract, which is extendable through 2026, represents Moeve’s first major supply initiative in the Canary Islands and reaffirms the energy company’s strategic expansion across Spain. This deal also underscores both companies’ deep-rooted commitment to the archipelago, where they have maintained a joint presence for nearly a century.

This agreement with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea opens a very important door for us, as we position ourselves as a key player in the decarbonization of the maritime sector in the Canary Islands,” said Samir Fernández, Director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Moeve. “We are determined to continue expanding across Spain, strengthening our leadership in the production and marketing of marine biofuel.

A Strategic Leap Toward Sustainable Shipping

For Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea, the move aligns with their long-standing environmental objectives.

We’re not starting from scratch; we’ve been implementing measures for years to reduce our environmental footprint, from route optimization to becoming pioneers in biofuel consumption,” said Sergio Vélez, CEO of Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea. “This agreement is another significant step forward and reinforces our commitment to protecting our marine environment and decarbonizing maritime transport.

The agreement’s significance extends beyond corporate commitments. It was formally recognized by the Port Authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, whose representatives emphasized the importance of this deal in aligning with regional sustainability strategies.

Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, stated, “This agreement fits in with the Port Authority’s strategy in this transition toward green fuels. Our goal is to provide our customers with operational excellence and a variety of products.

Pedro Suárez, President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, added, “We have been proactively positioning ourselves for years in the energy transition and with a clear commitment to sustainability. We celebrate this first supply, which will mean more sustainable calls and a more competitive port.

The Role of 2G Biofuels in the Maritime Energy Transition

The marine biofuels to be supplied under this agreement are produced at Moeve’s San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz and the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva. These second-generation fuels, derived from renewable raw materials, are capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 90% over their life cycle compared to traditional fossil fuels. Critically, they can be used in existing maritime engines and infrastructure without requiring modifications, making them a cost-effective and rapid solution for shipping companies aiming to decarbonize.

Moeve’s biofuels are already in use in major Spanish ports such as Algeciras, Barcelona, Ceuta, and Huelva. The expansion to the Canary Islands now strengthens Moeve’s footprint in southern Europe and demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver end-to-end fuel solutions across a wide maritime geography.

Positive Motion 2030: A Vision for Greener Transport

This agreement also supports Moeve’s broader sustainability roadmap, Positive Motion 2030, through which the company aims to become the leading producer of biofuels in Spain and Portugal. Moeve plans to reach an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons of green fuels by 2030, targeting hard-to-electrify sectors such as maritime, aviation, and heavy land transport.

With a 90-year history in the maritime fuels sector and operations across more than 60 Spanish ports, Moeve is uniquely positioned to lead the shift toward sustainable mobility. Its integrated value chain and investment in advanced fuel technologies allow it to offer competitive and eco-friendly energy solutions to maritime clients.

Toward a Sustainable Maritime Future

The Moeve-Armas Trasmediterránea partnership is not just a commercial contract—it’s a catalyst for transformative change in maritime transport in the Canary Islands. As shipping companies around the world seek cleaner alternatives and regulators tighten emissions standards, this agreement stands out as a forward-thinking model for regional decarbonization through collaboration, innovation, and strategic alignment with public and private sector goals.

By bringing renewable fuels to the Atlantic archipelago for the first time, Moeve and Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea are charting a sustainable course that could inspire similar initiatives across Europe’s coastal regions.
