GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN – September 2, 2025 — In a powerful demonstration of its commitment to sustainable marine fuels, Gasum, the Nordic energy leader in low-emission solutions, successfully completed the delivery of 120 metric tons of bio-LNG to Preem’s tanker Astana on August 29, 2025. The bunkering operation, conducted by Gasum’s flagship vessel Coralius in Gothenburg, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing transition toward cleaner, renewable fuels for gas-powered vessels.
Bio-LNG, a fully renewable liquefied biogas, offers a transformative solution to the maritime industry’s pressing emissions challenges. With up to 90% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels, bio-LNG enables shipowners to drastically reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency. This delivery to Astana underscores Gasum’s role as a pioneer in making bio-LNG a practical, scalable, and accessible fuel option for the marine sector.

Bio-LNG: A Readily Available, Scalable Pathway to Emission Reduction
The use of bio-LNG is gaining rapid traction as shipowners seek practical solutions to comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, including the EU’s FuelEU Maritime policy. Gasum’s bio-LNG, derived from sustainably sourced biogas, offers immediate emissions reductions while utilizing existing LNG infrastructure and vessel technology. This dual compatibility makes bio-LNG an attractive and feasible fuel choice for a wide range of gas-powered vessels.
The recent delivery to Astana in Gothenburg showcases the seamless integration of bio-LNG into commercial bunkering operations, proving that large-scale adoption of renewable marine fuels is not only possible but commercially viable today.
“Delivering bio-LNG to Preem’s Astana is more than a fuel transfer — it’s a testament to what strategic collaboration can achieve in maritime decarbonization,” said Kamrul Haque, Sales Manager, Maritime at Gasum. “This milestone highlights how partnerships between energy providers and shipping companies are essential in accelerating the adoption of renewable marine fuels and building a cleaner future for shipping.”
Operational Excellence Meets Environmental Leadership
The Coralius, Europe’s first purpose-built LNG bunkering vessel, continues to set the industry benchmark for safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible bunkering operations. Since entering service in 2017, Coralius has completed over 1,000 successful LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operations across Northern Europe, delivering more than 270,000 metric tons of LNG. In August 2025, the vessel further advanced its green credentials by transitioning to operate exclusively on bio-LNG, aligning with Gasum’s holistic sustainability strategy and reducing its own carbon footprint.
Looking Ahead: Driving the Maritime Energy Transition
Gasum’s dedication to innovation and sustainability is further demonstrated by its expanding fleet and service offerings. The company is set to introduce the new bunker vessel Celsius in 2027, equipped with state-of-the-art fuel efficiency and increased capacity to meet growing demand for LNG and bio-LNG bunkering services throughout the Nordics and beyond.
Through pioneering projects like this bio-LNG delivery and ongoing strategic partnerships with forward-thinking customers like Preem, Gasum is not only advancing the maritime industry’s energy transition but also setting a global standard for clean, responsible bunkering operations.
