This collaboration marks a significant step forward in meeting the European Union’s FuelEU Maritime regulation through the increased use of bio-LNG, a sustainable and low-emission alternative to traditional marine fuels.
As part of the expanded cooperation, two advanced LNG carriers operated by Anthony Veder – Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE – have joined Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime compliance pool as surplus generators. These vessels, which are chartered by Gasum, will now operate on bio-LNG, directly contributing to the generation of compliance credits under the EU’s evolving carbon intensity reduction mandate.

The FuelEU Maritime regulation, which enters into force in January 2025, requires ship operators to progressively reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels – beginning with a 2% reduction and scaling up to 80% by 2050. To support the transition and encourage flexibility, the regulation allows for compliance pooling, enabling vessels operating on ultra-low-emission fuels to generate surplus reductions that can be shared across a pool of ships.
