September 17, 2025 – In a strategic move set to redefine maritime decarbonization in Northern Europe and beyond, Gasum, Nordic energy company, and Rotterdam-based gas shipping specialist Anthony Veder have announced an expansion of their long-standing partnership. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in meeting the European Union’s FuelEU Maritime regulation through the increased use of bio-LNG, a sustainable and low-emission alternative to traditional marine fuels.

As part of the expanded cooperation, two advanced LNG carriers operated by Anthony Veder – Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE – have joined Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime compliance pool as surplus generators. These vessels, which are chartered by Gasum, will now operate on bio-LNG, directly contributing to the generation of compliance credits under the EU’s evolving carbon intensity reduction mandate.

A Strategic Partnership Anchored in Sustainability

The FuelEU Maritime regulation, which enters into force in January 2025, requires ship operators to progressively reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels – beginning with a 2% reduction and scaling up to 80% by 2050. To support the transition and encourage flexibility, the regulation allows for compliance pooling, enabling vessels operating on ultra-low-emission fuels to generate surplus reductions that can be shared across a pool of ships.

Gasum’s compliance pooling service – among the first of its kind in Europe – offers a turnkey solution for maritime operators seeking to fulfill regulatory obligations without immediate investments in vessel retrofitting or fuel conversion.

“We are very pleased that we can sail both Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE on bio-LNG. This will enable us to flexibly expand the capacity for our FuelEU Maritime pool even further, as demand is heating up towards the end of the first year of the regulation,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum. “At the same time, it’s great that a long-time partner such as Anthony Veder can also rely on us for their compliance pooling needs.”

Bio-LNG: A Key Lever in Maritime Emissions Reduction

Unlike conventional LNG, bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane) is produced from renewable raw materials such as organic waste, making it a fully renewable fuel. Bio-LNG reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels. It is also fully compatible with existing LNG infrastructure, making it a cost-effective and practical solution for current fleets.

Gasum’s unique value proposition lies in its integrated approach to compliance pooling – the company both manages the FuelEU Maritime pool and supplies the bio-LNG fuel to designated compliance vessels. This ensures a closed-loop system with verified sustainability outcomes, independently validated by classification society DNV.

“We at Anthony Veder are very happy that our vessels Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE will be running on bio-LNG and contributing to significant emission reductions in the maritime sector,” stated Björn van de Weerdhof, Commercial and Sustainability Director at Anthony Veder. “Joining Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool was a natural continuation of our long-time partnership, as we found the service to be the most cost-effective and reliable way to manage the requirements of the regulation.”

Accelerating the Path to Carbon-Neutral Shipping

The partnership comes at a critical juncture for the maritime sector, which is under mounting pressure to align with both EU and IMO climate targets. With decarbonization deadlines rapidly approaching, shipowners are actively seeking operational and commercial pathways to remain compliant without jeopardizing competitiveness.

By integrating Anthony Veder vessels into its compliance pool, Gasum is not only expanding its compliance surplus capacity but also enabling greater accessibility to green fuel solutions for the wider shipping community. Additional vessels from Anthony Veder’s fleet are also expected to join the pool, reinforcing a shared vision of sustainable shipping.

How Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime Pooling Works

As maritime operators prepare to comply with the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which mandates a progressive reduction in the carbon intensity of marine fuels starting in 2025, Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime Pooling solution offers shipowners a smart, cost-effective route to regulatory compliance.

Gasum’s commercial pool combines vessels that over-comply—such as the Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE operating on bio-LNG—with vessels that need additional support to meet the regulation. This pooling model allows surplus emissions savings from compliant vessels to be shared, helping other ships within the same pool meet their targets without immediately investing in green retrofits or alternative fuels.

The pooling service is more than just administrative. Gasum guarantees the supply of certified bio-LNG, mitigating risks linked to fuel availability and price volatility. With DNV validation, and Gasum taking full responsibility for maintaining the pool’s balance, participants benefit from a secure, transparent, and fully managed compliance framework.
