DONSÖ, SWEDEN – In a bold move reshaping the landscape of sustainable maritime operations, Furetank, a poineer in sustainable shipping, has announced the launch of a groundbreaking new company: CO2mpliance. This strategic subsidiary is designed to facilitate the trading of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions under the newly enacted FuelEU Maritime regulation — a framework that opens new doors for ambitious shipping companies to lead the climate transition.
With this initiative, Furetank not only advances its own environmental goals but also enables the wider industry to access a transparent, expert-led system for compliance and decarbonization. The company continues to raise the bar for proactive climate leadership in shipping.

FuelEU Maritime: From Regulation to Opportunity
The FuelEU Maritime regulation, in force since early 2025, mandates a steady decline in GHG emissions from commercial vessels operating within the EU — beginning with a 2% reduction from 2020 levels during 2025–2029, and culminating in an 80% reduction by 2050.
But this isn’t just a compliance burden. It’s a structured incentive system. Operators can now trade surplus emission reductions if they exceed mandated targets — creating a dual-track pathway to decarbonization: either reduce emissions directly or purchase reductions from those who’ve gone further.
Those who fall short will face steep financial penalties. Those who lead will be rewarded.
“This regulation isn’t just about rules. It’s about rewarding progress,” said Viktoria Höglund, CEO of CO2mpliance. “It creates a market where going green pays off — and we’re positioned at the forefront.”
Immediate Impact Through Renewable Fuels
Furetank’s readiness to capitalize on this system is no accident. The company’s in-house designed Vinga series of dual-fuel tankers, powered by liquefied methane, were built with this transition in mind. With no need for technical modifications, the fleet is already being bunkered with mass-balanced biomethane — delivering near-immediate, high-impact emission reductions.
“We’ve secured large-scale contracts for renewable biogas that will power our entire EU-operating Vinga fleet throughout 2025,” said Höglund. “This allows us not only to comply early, but to generate surplus reductions — which we can now trade.”
CO2mpliance: A New Market, A New Mission
Furetank’s newly launched subsidiary CO2mpliance is designed to harness this surplus, facilitating emission reduction trading for both internal use and external clients across the maritime sector.
The company will provide full-service solutions — handling compliance reporting, certification, trading transactions, and ongoing regulatory administration. With deep operational expertise, Furetank becomes a service provider in the new carbon economy of shipping.
“We’ve always developed the tools we needed when the market didn’t yet offer them,” said Höglund. “Our in-house chartering department became a service for others — now we’re applying the same model to emissions trading.”
A Catalyst for Change in Maritime Decarbonization
CO2mpliance is uniquely positioned to serve both ends of the emissions market:
- Leaders who surpass reduction targets and want to monetize their surplus.
- Lagging operators needing to purchase reductions to meet compliance deadlines.
By bridging these two groups, Furetank’s new venture aims to accelerate the maritime industry’s shift to renewable fuels — turning environmental compliance into a catalyst for competitive advantage.
“This isn’t about convenience. It’s about conviction,” said Höglund. “It’s easy to sit still, burn fossil fuels, and wait for certainty. We choose to lead — to invest early, act decisively, and build the infrastructure others will need.”
Continuing a Legacy of Proactive Sustainability
Furetank’s trailblazing role is nothing new. In the 1980s, it ordered double-hulled tankers years before international regulations mandated them. Today, that same vision powers its response to climate change — one that sees sustainability not as a regulatory burden, but as a core business opportunity.
The creation of CO₂mpliance reaffirms Furetank’s position as an architect of the fossil-free future — a company not just adapting to legislation, but shaping the way an entire industry responds to it.
