Conducted at Dalian Port, this landmark initiative marks a significant advancement in the global shipping industry’s journey toward decarbonization and demonstrates the commercial readiness of a fully integrated green ammonia value chain.
A Game-Changer for Maritime Decarbonization
The operation involved the successful transfer of green ammonia to the 5,500 HP tugboat “Yuantuo 1”, developed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry. The vessel is China’s first ammonia-powered vessel project and is classified as an “Ammonia Fuel Tug” by the China Classification Society (CCS).

Chifeng: A Fully Certified, Large-Scale Green Ammonia Production Hub
The green ammonia used in this operation originates from the Chifeng Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in Inner Mongolia—now fully operational and recognized as the world’s largest and most advanced green hydrogen-ammonia production site.
Key Features of the Chifeng Facility:
- Initial Capacity: 320,000 tons of green ammonia per year
- Planned Expansion: Scaling up to 1.5 million tons annually by 2028
- Power Source: Entirely off-grid, using 100% renewable energy from wind, solar, and battery storage
- AI Integration: Smart system dynamically optimizes power generation and ammonia synthesis

- Bureau Veritas Renewable Ammonia Certification (May 2025)
- ISCC PLUS Certification – First green ammonia project globally to receive verified GHG footprint certification
These certifications are critical to ensuring global tradeability, market confidence, and financial viability for green ammonia in marine fuel markets. Initial exports from the Chifeng facility are scheduled to begin in Q4 2025.

A Shift from Pilots to Scalable Reality
Unlike previous ammonia bunkering demonstrations—which used conventional or fossil-derived ammonia—this operation represents the first full-cycle green ammonia deployment for marine fuel, offering a real-world model for, Port authorities, Shipping lines and Energy Suppliers.
It validates the technical feasibility, safety standards, and logistical integration required to mainstream green ammonia as a reliable marine energy source.
