Denmark Tonder Biogas Plant Now Operational

Tønder Biogas, One of Europe’s largest biogas facilities is now fully operational in Denmark, producing over 40 million Nm³ of biomethane annually.

TØNDER, DENMARK — A major milestone in Europe’s transition to sustainable energy was marked with the full inauguration of Tønder Biogas, now officially declared operational and among the largest biogas facilities in Europe. Located in Southern Denmark, the state-of-the-art plant is designed to handle approximately 930,000 tonnes of sustainable organic material annually, generating more than 40.4 million Nm³ of biomethane — enough to power over 20,000 households with CO₂-neutral energy.

The plant, developed under the leadership of Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S in collaboration with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), exemplifies the next generation of renewable infrastructure — combining scale, innovation, and environmental responsibility.

A Project Rooted in Sustainability

Commissioned in phases between 2022 and 2025, the project was approximately 25% completed when Lundsby joined as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner in 2023. Since then, the company has overseen the turnkey design, technology integration, and final construction phases, bringing the biogas plant to full operational capacity.

Biogas has great potential to contribute to securing Denmark a CO₂-neutral and green energy supply,” said Carsten Nielsen, CEO of Lundsby Renewable Solutions. “Biogas is both environmentally friendly and locally sourced. It displaces fossil fuels and supports national and EU-level climate goals.

Nielsen emphasized the critical role played by Lundsby’s expert teams in Design & Technology, Turnkey Project Management, and Operation & Maintenance in realizing the full potential of the Tønder facility.

Technological Edge and Future Readiness

Tønder Biogas is not only one of the largest biomethane plants in Europe — it is also a model for future-ready green infrastructure. Designed with advanced biogas technologies, the facility can process a wide variety of organic feedstocks. Its high operational flexibility ensures that it can be adjusted to accommodate evolving regulatory standards, biomass sources, and energy demands.

Additionally, the facility integrates CO₂ capture technology, adding another layer of environmental value by reducing emissions that would otherwise contribute to climate change.

Lundsby has worked closely with partners throughout the design and commissioning process, ensuring an efficient and safe startup. The company’s Operations & Maintenance division remains actively involved to support ongoing operations and scalability.

Impact Beyond Borders

The inauguration of Tønder Biogas is more than just a national achievement — it has European and global implications. The plant plays a significant role in supporting the EU’s climate objectives, particularly the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and phasing out fossil fuels.

Its success demonstrates the viability of biogas as a stable, renewable, and locally-sourced energy alternative, reinforcing Denmark’s leadership in clean energy innovation.
